Tips for Brushing Your Teeth and Improving Oral Hygiene

Brushing and maintaining oral health will prevent tooth loss and keep your smile white and bright! This is good for your appearance and confidence and your overall health. You can also lessen the chances of diabetes and heart disease.

Plaque is an accumulation of bacteria that constantly forms in your teeth, even while sleeping! These bacteria will cause you to have cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. This is why it is essential to brush your teeth twice a day.

As a family dentistry clinic in Calgary, we are here to provide you with valuable toothbrushing tips to improve oral health!

What Type of Toothbrush Should I be Using?

When choosing a toothbrush, buy one according to the size of your mouth.

A smaller mouth would pair best with a smaller head, for example. As a family dentistry clinic in Calgary, we recommend using a soft or extra-soft toothbrush; however, a power toothbrush is better at removing plaque.

Toothbrushing Tips

Here are just a few valuable tips to remember when brushing your teeth:

  • Brush at a 45-degree angle, starting with the outer and inner surfaces. Make sure you are also brushing your back teeth.
  • Hold the toothbrush flat, and brush back and forth along the chewing surfaces.
  • Once inside the surfaces of your front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and use up-and-down strokes with the tip of the brush.
  • Ensure to brush along the gum line.
  • Don’t forget to brush your tongue in a back-to-front sweeping motion to remove food particles. This will be effective when eliminating bacteria in your mouth.
